Society Interview – Policing.

Hi everyone, we are almost starting the new academic year 2021/22, and we have some exciting articles planned for you at The Quack! To start this academic year, we thought that we would spotlight some societies here at EHU for Freshers or even those of you in second or third year who want to try something new. I was lucky enough to be able to interview the lovely Kira from Edge Hill’s Policing society, so if you study Policing, don’t forget to join! You can contact the society or find out more through their social media accounts on their Facebook, Edge Hill University Policing Society and Instagram, @ehupolicingsociety.

  1. How do you run your meetings and what happens in a typical session in the Policing Society? We plan to do things slightly differently to the policing society I joined when I was in my first year. We’d only meet when we had something approaching and we needed to plan, but this year, we’ll be holding meetings every other week, and we’ll be discussing upcoming campaigns, events, any current issues within the department or the university, and looking at anything else raised by a member.
  2. Does the society have any membership fees, and if so, how much is it? No, we don’t have any membership fees. From the get-go, and when I was in discussion with the Student Union regarding setting up the society, I’ve always said that I wanted the society to be a platform for policing students to have a place to be among like-minded people, and I didn’t believe that any individual’s financial circumstances should determine whether to join us or not!
  3. What is the main aim of the Policing Society? The main aim of the Policing Society is to provide a platform for policing students to discuss, socialise and network among like-minded individuals! We also want to run peer-to-peer support and mentoring with some of our very eager 3rd years!
  4. What is the society’s ‘mission’ or goal for the year? We’ve all had a rough year or so with Covid, so one of our main missions is to welcome our new, and old, policing students into the Edge Hill Community and the department, assisting with the smooth transition back to face-to-face, or hybrid learning. We also want to run networking events, considering our now-3rd years missed out on vital networking in their 2nd year. Finally, we’d also like to run social events, organised by our lovely socials manager Hannah, think we all need it. (And as a note from me, I genuinely couldn’t agree more! I think prioritising lessons again alongside social events is going to be so important this year for everyone!)
  5. What has been your favourite society event so far? With us being a new society this year, we haven’t had any events yet… BUT, not trying to throw any spoilers around, but some members have expressed an interest in themed socials. Cops and robbers to start with?
  6. What is one thing that you think someone will need when they join the society? A willingness to get stuck in and involved in all of our events, including our socials and networking events! We have ideas for some incredible guest speakers, and various other events and campaigns, and we really encourage active engagement and participation!
  7. What are you looking forward to with the Policing Society this coming academic year?I’m personally looking forward to our first meeting… laying everything out on the table, getting some ideas in place and making this the best year for the society!
  8. What was your inspiration for starting/joining the society? When I first started at Edge Hill, I remember representatives from the Policing Society coming into one of my lectures, and delivering a presentation to the group about the society. I wanted to get involved, straight away. As soon as it got around to us being able to do anything, Covid-19 hit, and life as we know it changed. The society that then tried to re-commence last year obviously couldn’t, and being the last remaining member at that point, I couldn’t in good conscience leave the society to just dissipate and vanish, so I decided to kickstart it, but on a much bigger scale. Registered with the SU, got an incredible committee together and started to brainstorm ideas… I really want to leave Edge Hill after my final year and know that the society is going to continue to flourish under an amazing leadership.

Thank you again Kira for that fantastic interview, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for more articles like this about some of EHU’s amazing societies!
