The Quack Interviews The EHU Wanderers

Hi everyone! With the start of the new academic year around the corner we have decided to spotlight some of our societies and sports teams to show you what they are all about! perfect for freshers wanting more information or for second and third years wanting to try out something new… Emma started us off with the great article on the Policing Society and I’m up now to discuss the EHU Wanderers. The lovely Emma was the one answering our questions.. if you have any further questions or want to get involved head to their instagram @ehuwanderers

1) What was your inspiration to start the society? I noticed there was not a hiking society at Edge Hill. So,after the year we’ve had I thought it would be good for there to be a society which promotes being in the outdoors. I love to go hiking with my family, making this society allows me to share my passion and meet new people.

2) How do you run your meetings and what happens in a typical session? During each month we will have a small hike/walk once every two weekswhere the first will be local, then the second further afield. At the end of each month, we will then have a more challenging and longer hike. There will be an email sent out before each hike/walk explaining the level of difficulty, a overview of the planned route and what kit is needed.

3) What Socials are you planning on doing? We have decided there will be a social once every month but occasionally we willgo to pub after a hike/walk if there is a pub nearby. Before each social we will send out a poll which will have two themes on it, members will then vote which of these two themes they would like us to do for the upcoming social.

4) Do you have any membership fees? Or is there anything people may have to pay for? We have no membership fees. However, there may be times we need members to pay a small cost towards transport hire, hiring a local guide such as for hiking Ben Nevis, for accommodation costs and for some socials.

5) What are your main aims for the society as a whole? Our main aims are to have fun, enjoy being in the outdoors, meet new people, develop new skills or work on existing ones and to be inclusive to all abilities.

6) What is your goal for the year? Our mission for the year is to successfully get the society up and running and having a good following for the years to come.

7) Is there anything a new member might need for the society? A member will need hiking boots, waterproofs, a rucksack, water bottle, sensible outdoor gear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions especially for the more challenging hikes at the end of each month.

8) What is your one piece of advice for freshers? Our advice for Freshers is not to drink alcohol before going up a hill. (SOUNDS LIKE GREAT ADVICE TO US!!!)

9) Are freshers going to be able to find you at freshers fair? Yes we will have a stand at Freshers Fair.

And that is the end of our interview! Everyone should go and give the EHU Wanderers on the 29th September in the Hub at their stall!! And if you can’t make that drop their instagram a message!

Just want to pass on another huge thank you to Emma for allowing us to interview her on behalf of the team and hopefully you are inspired to go and give them a look!!

Keep an eye out for our next amazing society!!

– Emilia.
