The Quack Interviews The Uni Boob Society!

by Cara Gaskell

As we are half way through the first week of university and freshers week is behind us, The Quack are continuing their introduction of societies with the Uni Boob Society, who are a fundraising/charity society that raise money for breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, who are the only UK based charity that focus exclusively on young people and breast cancer after their founder, Kristin Hallenga, had to fight over a year for a diagnosis at 23 years old. I had a lovely interview with the president Emilia McRobie to get more information. Make sure to check out their Instagram page at @ubt_ehu!

  1. As you are a new society for 2021, how are you hoping a typical meeting with the Uni Boob Society will run?

We’re hoping to quickly run through plans for the next events and assess past events then talk all things boobs and life! We’re hoping they will all be so relaxed with full of snacks and excitement!

2. Does the society have any membership fees? And how can people join the Uni Boob Society if they’re interested?

We don’t have any membership fees as volunteering should not come at a cost! If you want to join the society, come and find us at freshers fair, on the Freshers app, or just message one of our social media pages.

3. What is the main aim of the Uni Boob Society?

The main aim to assist CoppaFeel! with their amazing message. To encourage, educate and empower people to check their chest and speak up when they notice that something changes as well as fundraising to allow CoppaFeel! to continue their amazing work!

4. What is the societies mission for the year?

We would love to get 200+ students signed up to CoppaFeel!’s amazing monthly message service as well as raising £2000 for them!

5. What has been your favourite society event so far?

We haven’t had any yet, but there are plenty to look forward too!

6. What is one thing that somebody who is looking into joining the society will need?

A love for boobs!

7. What are you looking forward to with the Uni Boob Society this year?

We’re really looking forward to having a strong group of people out at the university spreading such an important message and having so much fun while doing it.

8. What was your inspiration behind the society?

I have worked with CoppaFeel! through my small business and thought this was the perfect society for Edge Hill as anyone can join. You don’t have to have a specific hobby or be good at a sport to join our team!

Thank you to Emilia for this interview, it was a pleasure to do. Make sure to grab your tickets for the pub quiz that will be held in the SU bar and The Venue on Thursday 14th October! To attend, a ticket can be bought by donating £3 to the Uni Boob Society JustGiving page, make sure to leave your names! Teams of 4-6 are recommended!

Politics Society Interview Article

Carrying on from interviewing Edge Hill’s societies, today’s post is featuring the politics society.

For anyone looking to gain a greater understanding of the way the country is governed, or just want a place to share their enthusiasm about politics, the Politics Society is here! A community of like-minded people gather every other Tuesday at 12pm to discuss political events.

There are big plans in the works this year for this society, as they are hoping to have local politicians come in and speak at sessions. How exciting!

There’s no hidden payments or agendas in this society. Their aim is to be a safe space for those of all political views to interact with those who share their views, as well as those from other parties, while still remaining polite and respectful towards one another.

A room for the meetings has not yet been assigned, but stay on the lookout on the Student’s Union website.

For any more information, reach out to the society’s amazing committee:

Perfect for freshers wanting more information or for second and third years wanting to try out something new… Today its the turn of the Pokemon+ society. I spoke to their treasurer Bethan.

1) What was your inspiration to start the society? The original motivation behind the founding of the society was wanting to create a space where people could enjoy pokemon, mario and other such games.

2) How do you run your meetings and what happens in a typical session? We usually meet every Wednesday night from 6pm, hopefully we will have a hub room when we come back.

3) What Socials are you planning on doing? We meet every week and sometimes run trips to the pokemon store, previously we ran a Mario tournament which was my favourite event. We are also planning on doing some really fun stuff like, pokemon showdowns, Mario events and trading card events.

4) Do you have any membership fees? Or is there anything people may have to pay for? We have no membership fees. However, sometimes when running a prize draw we ask for a small payment for those wishing to take part.

5) What are your main aims for the society as a whole? Our main aims are to have fun, teach people about pokemon, meet new people and build up a fun society.

6) What is your goal for the year? To return to face to face meetings as Covid’s online meetings were fraught with complications. We hope to encourage more people to join and have fun learning about Pokemon.

7) Is there anything a new member might need for the society? No, if you don’t own anything Pokemon related that’s fine, members will always be happy to share and involve you in games.

8) What is your one piece of advice for freshers? Bring enthusiasm and lots of it!

9) Favourite Pokemon?Gliscor – because of their fun and cute personality, I just think they’re really cool!

The Quack Interviews The EHU Wanderers

Hi everyone! With the start of the new academic year around the corner we have decided to spotlight some of our societies and sports teams to show you what they are all about! perfect for freshers wanting more information or for second and third years wanting to try out something new… Emma started us off with the great article on the Policing Society and I’m up now to discuss the EHU Wanderers. The lovely Emma was the one answering our questions.. if you have any further questions or want to get involved head to their instagram @ehuwanderers

1) What was your inspiration to start the society? I noticed there was not a hiking society at Edge Hill. So,after the year we’ve had I thought it would be good for there to be a society which promotes being in the outdoors. I love to go hiking with my family, making this society allows me to share my passion and meet new people.

2) How do you run your meetings and what happens in a typical session? During each month we will have a small hike/walk once every two weekswhere the first will be local, then the second further afield. At the end of each month, we will then have a more challenging and longer hike. There will be an email sent out before each hike/walk explaining the level of difficulty, a overview of the planned route and what kit is needed.

3) What Socials are you planning on doing? We have decided there will be a social once every month but occasionally we willgo to pub after a hike/walk if there is a pub nearby. Before each social we will send out a poll which will have two themes on it, members will then vote which of these two themes they would like us to do for the upcoming social.

4) Do you have any membership fees? Or is there anything people may have to pay for? We have no membership fees. However, there may be times we need members to pay a small cost towards transport hire, hiring a local guide such as for hiking Ben Nevis, for accommodation costs and for some socials.

5) What are your main aims for the society as a whole? Our main aims are to have fun, enjoy being in the outdoors, meet new people, develop new skills or work on existing ones and to be inclusive to all abilities.

6) What is your goal for the year? Our mission for the year is to successfully get the society up and running and having a good following for the years to come.

7) Is there anything a new member might need for the society? A member will need hiking boots, waterproofs, a rucksack, water bottle, sensible outdoor gear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions especially for the more challenging hikes at the end of each month.

8) What is your one piece of advice for freshers? Our advice for Freshers is not to drink alcohol before going up a hill. (SOUNDS LIKE GREAT ADVICE TO US!!!)

9) Are freshers going to be able to find you at freshers fair? Yes we will have a stand at Freshers Fair.

And that is the end of our interview! Everyone should go and give the EHU Wanderers on the 29th September in the Hub at their stall!! And if you can’t make that drop their instagram a message!

Just want to pass on another huge thank you to Emma for allowing us to interview her on behalf of the team and hopefully you are inspired to go and give them a look!!

Keep an eye out for our next amazing society!!

Society Interview – Policing.

Hi everyone, we are almost starting the new academic year 2021/22, and we have some exciting articles planned for you at The Quack! To start this academic year, we thought that we would spotlight some societies here at EHU for Freshers or even those of you in second or third year who want to try something new. I was lucky enough to be able to interview the lovely Kira from Edge Hill’s Policing society, so if you study Policing, don’t forget to join! You can contact the society or find out more through their social media accounts on their Facebook, Edge Hill University Policing Society and Instagram, @ehupolicingsociety.

  1. How do you run your meetings and what happens in a typical session in the Policing Society? We plan to do things slightly differently to the policing society I joined when I was in my first year. We’d only meet when we had something approaching and we needed to plan, but this year, we’ll be holding meetings every other week, and we’ll be discussing upcoming campaigns, events, any current issues within the department or the university, and looking at anything else raised by a member.
  2. Does the society have any membership fees, and if so, how much is it? No, we don’t have any membership fees. From the get-go, and when I was in discussion with the Student Union regarding setting up the society, I’ve always said that I wanted the society to be a platform for policing students to have a place to be among like-minded people, and I didn’t believe that any individual’s financial circumstances should determine whether to join us or not!
  3. What is the main aim of the Policing Society? The main aim of the Policing Society is to provide a platform for policing students to discuss, socialise and network among like-minded individuals! We also want to run peer-to-peer support and mentoring with some of our very eager 3rd years!
  4. What is the society’s ‘mission’ or goal for the year? We’ve all had a rough year or so with Covid, so one of our main missions is to welcome our new, and old, policing students into the Edge Hill Community and the department, assisting with the smooth transition back to face-to-face, or hybrid learning. We also want to run networking events, considering our now-3rd years missed out on vital networking in their 2nd year. Finally, we’d also like to run social events, organised by our lovely socials manager Hannah, think we all need it. (And as a note from me, I genuinely couldn’t agree more! I think prioritising lessons again alongside social events is going to be so important this year for everyone!)
  5. What has been your favourite society event so far? With us being a new society this year, we haven’t had any events yet… BUT, not trying to throw any spoilers around, but some members have expressed an interest in themed socials. Cops and robbers to start with?
  6. What is one thing that you think someone will need when they join the society? A willingness to get stuck in and involved in all of our events, including our socials and networking events! We have ideas for some incredible guest speakers, and various other events and campaigns, and we really encourage active engagement and participation!
  7. What are you looking forward to with the Policing Society this coming academic year?I’m personally looking forward to our first meeting… laying everything out on the table, getting some ideas in place and making this the best year for the society!
  8. What was your inspiration for starting/joining the society? When I first started at Edge Hill, I remember representatives from the Policing Society coming into one of my lectures, and delivering a presentation to the group about the society. I wanted to get involved, straight away. As soon as it got around to us being able to do anything, Covid-19 hit, and life as we know it changed. The society that then tried to re-commence last year obviously couldn’t, and being the last remaining member at that point, I couldn’t in good conscience leave the society to just dissipate and vanish, so I decided to kickstart it, but on a much bigger scale. Registered with the SU, got an incredible committee together and started to brainstorm ideas… I really want to leave Edge Hill after my final year and know that the society is going to continue to flourish under an amazing leadership.

Thank you again Kira for that fantastic interview, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for more articles like this about some of EHU’s amazing societies!

Small Businesses at Edge Hill – Part 5

I wanted to start a series on small businesses (starting with those in our university) as supporting small is such an important thing to do. We forget while shopping online that there are small business all around which provide great quality home made bits and many of them may be owned by people you know and have seen before. I am hoping that this article will be the first of many to come… I am planning on featuring a few small businesses a week to get through the list of businesses I have already found. Please go and check out all of their social medias and show some support. Even if you don’t want to purchase their items by showing support you are helping to grow their business and giving other people a chance to see it too…

K SHARMA DESIGNS

Kanie Sharma is a 3rd year Web Design and Development who wanted to start a side hustle while in her last year of university, and decided that the second lockdown would be the best time to start. She started by providing a logo design for a housemate, which turned into greeting cards and stationery, and she now provides graphic and web design services. You are able to find her on all socials under @KSharmaDesigns.

PERSONAL CRAFTS FOR YOU

Faye runs a business around personalised gifts – from bottles, to house numbers, to bags. She started her business in the 2020 lockdown while waiting for her placement to start, due to her being a PGCE Primary Teaching student. You can find her stock on http://www.personalcraftsforyou.com .

NAILSBY_LROSE

Leah is a 20 year old, first year Primary Education student. When asked why she started her business she stated, “I started Nailsby_lrose because I love doing nails and realised as a generation that love beauty, we end up spending so much money paying for our nails done and decided if I bought the stuff then what was stopping me from doing it myself? So I taught myself and asked some professionals the best products and ways of doing the nails and it started from there really.” – A self taught nail artist! My First Week in the US – Global Welcome!

Week One – Global Welcome!

After a long and tiring journey to get to Conway, Arkansas, I arrived to one of the most welcoming and diverse communities I have ever experienced. As of right now (Thursday the 12th August 2021), most of the people on campus are international students, students with sports scholarships, and students/staff that are helping get us international students settled in before everyone else arrives.

So, what has happened in my first week over here in the States, you ask? Well, just about everything! Tours of the campus, the VERY impressive gym and all its additional features that don’t cost a penny (or a cent), meeting lots and lots of people, a pool party (hosted by a family off campus for ALL international students) and the very warm weather that graces this part of the world.

My first week on campus has nearly come to an end already, with three days left before I have to open up my room on campus to another person! That’s right, everything you see in the films is true in this sense. Luckily, I have been able to speak to my future roommate over the past month and I am very excited to meet and get to know her.

As of my education here, classes start on the 19th August – a date that would probably terrify a lot of you UK students that are expecting another month and a half of summer holidays. For anyone that doesn’t already know, I study creative writing at Edge Hill University and that is also what I have chosen to study here at UCA. As I update you on my life here, I’ll post little updates on my course and the education side of things for anyone interested in studying here too!

I’ve been welcomed so warmly here and so far, I’m having the most amazing time. I can’t wait to let you all know on my adventure out here over the Atlantic, and if you have any questions feel free to email me or get on touch on social media via The Quack (on Instagram).

Best Friendship TV shows and Movies

Happy World Friendship Day (for yesterday!)

To celebrate I wanted to give to you a list of my favourite friend based TV shows and movies!

The Bold Type

This has become a new favourite of mine – based on a group of three amazing strong women! Each of them deal with their own problems, from finding their sexuality to their dream job as well as juggling their relationships, social media and real life. From my experience this is such as easy watch! It is on in the background as I type.

Gilmore Girls

Although not your traditional friendship this TV show looks at the relationship between mother and daughter and how this can sometimes become the strongest friendship you can ever have. As well as Rory’s relationship with her mother it also explores the dynamic between her and grandparents, other friends and boyfriends – causing one of the most debated question in time… Jess, Dean or Logan?

Greys Anatomy

THIS SHOW! This show is my ultimate binge! Any mood- sad or happy! Although our main characters from season 1 don’t all stay in the show (sorry, SPOILER! But if you haven’t seen it by now – COME ON!!) we see characters grow, characters join and all come together. There is no team like the Grey’s Anatomy team.

Friends

Think this is probably the biggest classic in this list… Friends has been around so long and with its recent reunion it has almost been brought right back to its famous beginnings. Friends has its 6 main characters who all have unique qualities and you will fall in love with each and every one of them – and also how they relate to each other.

Gossip Girl

If you want something a little younger – a throwback to what we all thought our secondary schools were going to be like – this is for you! Gossip Girl follows a group of teenage ages who live their lives in New York City.

The Breakfast Club

An unusual grouping of teens placed in one room for a few hours… not the most exciting summary of a movie but this is just again another classic! Love this film as it questions everything we are taught about friendships – don’t just stick with what you know. Be friends with everyone. And also DON’T TRUST THE STEREOTYPES

Bridesmaids

The perfect film for one of those girlie get together afternoons. Get your girlfriends together! Get the ice cream! Get the chocolate! (Or crisps if you’re a savoury kinda gal!) And enjoy this hilarious film!

Mamma Mia

I have left the best until last… how can we forget about Donna and the dynamos? Although this movie maybe seem like just a romantic film you cannot forget the important relationships between mam and daughter, as well as The Dynamos, the men in Donna’s life and Sophie’s amazing bridesmaids!

Edge Hill Uni Boob Team

Coming to Edge Hill in September 2021.

One of the many uni boob teams around the UK

Hi I’m Emilia and I’m your new Uni Boob Team Leader – if you want to know a little more about me feel free to read my “Meet the Newbie” post. I am posting to share my next adventure… starting a uni boob team.

It all started in March when I applied through Coppafeel to start a team at Edge Hill as I noticed we didn’t have one. In June I found out I was invited for an interview and in July found out the interview went well and I was successful. Now you may be wondering what a Uni Boob Team is all about…

First of all the name may give it away… BOOBS and lots of them (but also pecks). Coppafeel is a charity who works with ALL young people to encourage them to talk boobs, check themselves and pass the message on. So that is what we’re here to do!

The mission of our team is to talk all things boobs and pecks as well as encouraging other people to chat about them too! We need to remove the stigma of checking ourselves. The younger you start to check yourself the better – it often leads to earlier detection of breast cancer and therefore is easier to treat.

Now where it gets even more fun… As we are working directly with Coppafeel we host lots of fun fundraisers to give back to them, from parties to boob ball fights to whatever you want to do! The group is very flexible and we are able to plan fundraisers around your schedule and do activities that YOU want to do!

So just to quickly sum up… lots of boob talk, lots of fun and lots of raising money for charity!!!

For another look feel free to watch any of Coppafeel’s videos on their uni boob teams such as this one: https://youtu.be/7_hLNIhWoaQ

If you want any more information then contact me on any of the below (or to let me know you are interested in joining!!! I am trying to recruit as early as possible to prep for September):

Messenger – Emilia McRobie

Instagram – @emiliaxjaneexx or @titsandbits_x

Email: 24440388@edgehill.ac.uk

I am currently in the process of applying to make this amazing group an official society but if all else fails we can just work as a group ourselves with the help of the amazing Coppafeel.

Pride Month! LGBTQ+ movie/show recommendations.

Hi all! Following on from my last post detailing some books that I recommend that you read, here are some LGBTQ+ movies and shows that I particularly enjoyed that I wanted to share for Pride Month also. If you haven’t seen them, then I would recommend that you have a watch! – Emma 🙂

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow:

Legends of Tomorrow is a show which (loosely) follows a variety of characters from DC Comics, time travelling and going on various adventures. The earlier seasons have the gritty DC Comics vibe that you would come to expect, taking characters from a mixture of CW’s much beloved Arrow and The Flash. Later on in the series however, it begins to become wackier and more light-hearted – basically it’s my comfort show. More importantly, however, the LGBTQ+ representation is why it is on this list. It’s not perfect, but it features the main characters of Sara Lance and John Constantine who are bisexual and Ava Sharpe, a lesbian character. Side characters (alternative universe) consist of Leo Snart (not Leonard, different character) who is pansexual, and his love interest superhero ‘The Ray’, who is gay – both are played by gay men. The show doesn’t make a big deal about the characters’ sexualities, but there are some great tender moments in the crossover episodes especially with ‘Crisis of Earth X.’ I’d recommend giving this a watch, it’s pretty fun. #Avalance until I die, by the way!

Love, Simon:

Going a bit obvious here with Love, Simon, but I recently watched it and it was pretty good. I also cried when he came out to his mum because it was such a cute scene, and I love a good soppy bit in movies. Although focusing on the ‘norm’ of the young white gay guy, and being a bit cheesy, I think the film is a good American high school feel-good film about Simon figuring out his identity. The film deals with stereotypes, and I found that some particular scenes show people, especially young people, the realities and the struggles of what being a member of the LGBTQ+ community is like. For example, Simon is outed against his will by someone that he thinks is a friend, and he faces homophobia and humiliation in school when two boys dress up as him and the “only other gay boy in the school” and mock them. Of course, the film has a happy ending, but Simon does have some struggles throughout the story.

Bohemian Rhapsody:

Bohemian Rhapsody, although it took some ‘artistic’ liberties with the story of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen, was such a good movie in my opinion. It didn’t shy away from Freddie’s identity, even acknowledging his bisexuality, when Freddie is so commonly known as a ‘gay icon’ (an icon, he absolutely is however, I’m not denying that.) For me, a full exploration of his sexuality would have been better, but I guess the film sold better with its 12A rating. The story is great, the tunes are amazing and Rami Malek is like perfect for me as Freddie. Again, if you’re looking for something open about the treatment of LGBTQ+ people (especially in an era characterised by HIV and AIDS) but some feel-good aspects too, then this is the one!

I hope that you enjoyed reading about some of my favourite shows/movies that feature LGBTQ+ characters to enjoy in June and of course, all year around.
